If you diet, skip this post. Just stop. It doesn’t relate to you. This is for you all who don’t mind, fat, sugar, salt and caffeine.
Ok, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, when we travel, we usually don’t eat traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner meals. We just eat what we want, when we want. Hey, that’s the whole premise of a vacation. Indulgence. So if you are in Portland for one day – and the mission is to eat well – here’s where we recommend.
Pip’s Doughnuts and Chai, first thing in the morning – Before you do anything, head over to Pip’s for these bite sized donuts, drizzled with honey and Nutella and finished with a dusting of sugar and sea salt. I won’t lie, the chai isn’t crazy. It’s not bad, but the attraction is the donuts for sure. Amazing atmosphere as well. Portlanders in general are overbearingly friendly and welcoming. (avoid Voodoo Doughnuts like the plague)
Miss Delta’s, a little bit later – There are tons of green spaces in Portland to take a walk…I mean jog. Get in a little exercise before this one. Order the fried chicken and sunny side up egg stacked on a flaky buttermilk biscuit, smothered in gravy. Ok, that’s all.
Potato Champion, the next time you get hungry – This is a food cart at one of the many food cart pods in Portland. There are permanent food trucks/carts in different areas, so you always know where to find them. Pay a visit to Potato Champion and get the peanut butter & jelly fries. Yeah, you heard that right. Portland is weird. But weird in a good way. It’s not actually peanut butter. It’s a peanut sauce similar to the Malay peanut sauce used as a satay dip. We also had paneer fries. If you like paneer, the Indian dish, you will drool over these fries.
Salt and Straw, in the evening – This hip ice cream spot has some funky flavors – sea salt w/caramel, honey lavender, pear w/blue cheese. And then there are the flavors that are in and out with the seasons. We were there during Thanksgiving week and they had a buttered mashed potatoes & gravy flavor! The lines are long, but enjoy it. Just listen to the conversations that people are having. Have I mentioned that Portland is weird?
There you have it, one day in Portland. The next day you may want to go with a veggie smoothie and a real workout. I promise, I will never do a post on the healthy food, sorry.
